Emergency bridges - there simply aren't enough of them.
In Tim Ecott's "Neutral Buoyancy" there's a brilliant photo of pre-Cousteau divers with their Michelin-supplied air cylinders (designed to inflate pneumatic tyres) strapped to their chests. There's no regulator, they just took "sips" of air from hoses on the valve. I'll see if there's one on Google.
