It is based on the assumption that "newsworthy" events dictate the excitement (boring-1) levels of the day. This is nonsense. Surely there are many births, deaths, and marriages that have an impact on society in any one day. What's more important to someone that got married on 22 November 1963 - their marriage, or JFK being shot?
All very well doing some search engine on newsworthy events, but come on Cambridge-type-guys, "must do better!".
{Thinking of something more like 'National Excitement on day = SQRT [(no. weddings)2 + (no. births)2] / population ...but way more thorough, taking christmas into accout... or summation of {individual stuff} }
For those who don't know, William Tunstall-Pedoe wrote a superb anagram generator (Anagram Genius - apparently referred to in the DaVinci Code books) for RISCOS - He's now working on a project called True Knowledge (I'll post this to WA post, too)
I think that the conclusion is deeply flawed.
