//One day our teacher would give us a problem and solve for X. No problem. But then, the next day, the teacher would give us another problem and X would equal SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! I mean, come on! We just solved for X yesterday! How can X be all these different numbers?! Don't get me started on imaginary numbers. That's a racket if I've ever heard one. They're making up numbers, people! // via

    In my younger days I had a girlfriend who struggled with math (And that's probably why she started going out with me, come to think of it). I tried to help her get her head around algebra, and the x thing was a problem. Eventually we stopped using x and started using 'penguin'.

    I will never forget the maths worksheets at school called "matchbox algebra". No. They did not involve wee cars. The involved working out the number of matches in a box.
