  1. Nice. It's time for a robotic tennis match.

  2. For me, the sensory aspect is the most impressive. By that I mean the constant adaptation and dexterirty to manipulate the target and the responsive adjustment. Excellent tracking and targeting systems for projectiles and so on have been around for ages- I remember being shown demonstration of the 'goalkeeper' system on board a naval vessel. It is the last line of anti-missile defence and is basically a machine gun that shoots them down (although the shrapnel will still shower the ship).

  3. Yeah, that's the Phalanx CIWS. That's a bad ass mofo, but dexterity doesn't enter into it.

I'd be curious how the robot deals with an uneven surface. I'd also be curious if the robot could extrapolate the shape of the surface based on how the ball bounced.

  4. Prettty much. The one on the British frigate that I was on was, literally, the Goalkeeper.

You're right though. The complications between a simple penduluum and a compound penduluum are bad enough - and that's a with a fixed fulcrum...

  5. Fair enough. There were three or four on the carrier I was stationed on. I have video tape around somewhere of one of the live tests. It's loud and exciting, as I'm sure you know. It's also abysmally stupid and there are apocryphal tales of the thing shooting friendlies when a target passes in front of them.
