I seem to remember an AC Clarke essay fromn the 1970s on experiments on spiders with drugs. About the only one with any effect was LSD, where the spiders made a slightly fancier web.
Back in the real world, they did recently discover an actual vegetarian spider (the only one now so far) - the funny thing is, it still stalks and pounces on the shoots it eats as though they were live prey.
