Could this kind of thing be done as a plug-in to Internet Relay Chat programs like MIrc or Pirch? Nowhere near as streamlined as using a browser, but you're then not at the mercy of a single URL.
I once had a "scratchpad" set up on a web site. People went to a password-protected directory, where they could type directly onto a single text-box scratchpad, and save it. It was about as simple as a "message board" could get. But that would not have worked well if more than one person was typing at the same time.
I guess demand exceeded supply. I had to sign up for a waiting list.

I think this allows upto 8 to be updating at the same time
