There was a similar (ish) Arduino project recently where someone had a huge collection of Amiga 3.5 inch floppy disks from magazines that he wanted to archive. He built a hopper feed mechanism that fed one disk at a time into a disk drive, dumped a raw copy of the disk to hard drive (Amiga was a peculiar format, it seems), then as the disk was ejected, a camera took a shot of the label to add to the database.
