Core memory was already on its way out when I started getting interested in computers, but I always wondered if it was possible to hear them working. It always thought there'd be a tiny amount of mechanical movement with each write operation. On the other hand, computers were so noisy back then because of the cooling fans, it seems unlikely you've ever hear anything.

The computers I worked on the in the Navy used core memory. They had three 3' x 4' trays of the stuff. Gave each one something like 32k of RAM.
