Didn't a couple of brits do something similar about a year ago (involved a high-altitude weather balloon?)
Yes, quite a few have done balloons (almost certain it is illegal), but none has made it to orbit, AFAIK.I'm pretty sure with our sapphire and titanium construction, one of ours would probably survive re-entry ;-)
