I don't really get it, not fully. It seems to need a second drive input which has to run at a variable speed, which also has to resist torque. That's practically needing a second gearbox to run the gearbox, isn't it?And even if you use two power sources, don't their torque characteristics need to be pretty well matched to avoid one of them driving the other backwards? I'm assuming there's something clever in the first two planetary gears which don't get much of a mention.
What I understood from the video was that the control-shaft didn't need to have any significant power - It was just down to the ratio of the shafts' speeds... HOWEVER...a petrol head fiend of mine (not a typo!) assures me that the following day there were several posts arguing that, in fact, it's not quite as good-news as we hoped, and that the quest continues for this most Holy Grail
