I had not previously been aware of the back story to "Rain Man", nor even of Kim Peek's existence. Thank you for sharing it...I didn't notice, but did you happen to learn if Kim's father, Fran, survived his son? (In some ways I found his unflagging devotion to his son even more amazing than Kim's unnatural abilities.) That would be very sad, indeed.
I don't think that the linked program even mentioned the mother or existence of a brother and sister (who were identified in the Wikipedia link), which made Fran's dotage on his son seem like a very lonely responsibility for a man of his seniority. If one had to pass on before the other, I suppose this was the better way in this particular case, though in general one would wish that no parent should have to endure the futility, loss and pain of outliving his children.
