I'm kinda surprised that there are enough bird fanciers for this small Scottish story to have made the map at all. But I suppose it bodes well for a peacefully spinning globe that Bing/ Google/Microsoft stories occupied the top corners while bird news completed the day's events.
I think it was Hector (some years ago) that introduced another global NewsMap site in the halbakery that was more geopolitically oriented. I will have to look that up and try to remember how it managed to rise above the biases of any other world news service. I remember, though, that it succeeded in being far more interesting to look at than a periodic table of the elements.
That's exactly what the muti map does. Pick any spot on the globe, zoom in to get a local map, and the local news appears in the side bar. In a test of my home town, it provided a dozen news stories that were occurring within a ten mile radius, and specifically excluded stories that were about greater Los Angeles. This site is powered by a combination of Google Maps in conjunction with Yahoo!News. It's fairly impressive.
At the bottom right of my current view of this site is this item:

I default the link to UK Tech news (I think). Fiddle about with the settings to suit
ReplyDelete[Edit]Nice to see the Beavers coming back to Loch Sween, though
{WIBNI it translated the news to english, too - I'd love to see what's new in technology in Japan or Argentina right now!}

ReplyDeleteThat'd make a great Google Maps add-on... Highlight a town and see it's local news!
ReplyDeleteThe BEEB may be helping, as there's a programme called Springwatch which may be helping to promote stuff like this
ReplyDelete{Just a hunch}
Neither of these two links are the site I was describing, but both are interesting in their own right:

http://www.globalincidentmap.com/map.php
That global incident map's on -+/ somewhere (I could've sworn I'd tagged it, too)

ReplyDeleteJesus Wept!.
Difficult to see her doing covers of Amy Winehouse songs.
ReplyDeleteI dunno, she's nearly there
ReplyDeleteGive it a beehive, short skirt and some crap Tatts and she could pass.....

ReplyDeleteAll I'm saying is, "Have you ever seen Susan and Amy on stage at the same time?"
ReplyDeleteI wanted to see today's technology news in Tokyo :(
ReplyDeleteI have to say that as tramp-stamps go, Amy's are some of the very crappest.
