Some of the most elegant were Einstein's Gedankenexperiment. I can remember trying to replicate Millikan's oil drop experiment at school. Didn't manage it, but got some great sparks out of the EHT supply.
I just *knew* that the Millikan oil drop experiment would be there. For my high school physics, I had the choice of that brilliant, but highly tedious, experiment to demonstrate the electron mass or I the measurement of small g. With small g I got to construct a penduluum that was 3 stories high (I should have notice the Focault effect, but missed it) and also a Kater pendulum made from steel and brass.

The best experiments are the elegant ones.
ReplyDeleteAnd just remember that Schroedinger's cat was a thought experiment.
* no animals were harmed in the making of this thought experiment
ReplyDeleteI always liked this one : Miller 1952
ReplyDeleteProbably
ReplyDeleteWell, not the last time we looked.
